Gentile Exposed

 Letter 474 (Gentile Exposed)                                              21/01/2011

Psalm 83:2-4: "For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head.  They have taken crafty counsel against Your people/am, and consulted together against Your sheltered/hidden/treasured ones.  They have said, 'Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation/goy, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more'" (Psalm 83:2-4 emphasis added).

For several years now, I have had cause to suspect the usage, in the English translations, of the Hebrew word "goy" and "goyim."  The more I thought and prayed about it, the more I began to be alarmed, especially after reading Psalm 83.  Indeed, if the enemies of Israel want to cut us off from being a nation/goy, what better way of doing it than through a change in the definition or translation of words?  If, for example, "goy" is understood to mean a non-Jewish person, heathen, or gentile/non-Israelite, then Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob's progeny/seed, who according to YHVH's promises were supposed to be a "goy gadol" (great goy) and m'lo-ha-goyim (fullness or multitudes of nations), would actually turn out to be non-Jewish\non-Israelite individuals, heathens, and gentile/pagans. Does not that sound like replacement theology? Or worse, loss of identity/ethnicity.

Ethnos" is typically translated "Gentile” in the New Testament. But we have to remember that in the Church's understanding even when it is rendered "nation" all too often it is perceived as a non-Israelite or “a mixed multitude”.  In Damascus a Jew by the name of Ananias had a vision where "… the Lord said to him, "Go, for he [Saul, the former persecutor of the Believers] is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles/ethnos, kings, and the children of Israel" (Acts  9:15).  Was Ananias referring to the promises to Abraham, Sarah, and Jacob: "Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations/goyim shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body (Genesis 17:6; Genesis 35:11 emphases added)?

Was Paul another one who was sent out to the nations to procure the sons of Israel (the "lost sheep") who had become nations and kings?  I'm sure Yeshua didn't change his mind when He said that He was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel (ref.  Mat. 15:24). In the following scriptures Paul writes (quoting from the Tanach):  "For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery, lest you be wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles [ethnos] has come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, there shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob…"  (Romans 11:25-26 (Isaiah 59:20) emphasis added).  Again, the usage of "Gentiles" totally takes the reader away from understanding the "mystery of the blindness of Israel."  The "fullness of the nations/goyim" is of course quoted from the blessing to Ephraim in Genesis 48:19. Additionally, what does "all Israel" and a "Deliverer who comes out of Zion to turn away ungodliness from Jacob," mean if these expressions have nothing to do with Jacob and his seed or progeny?

A similar case could be made in regard to Peter's commentary, where he quotes from the Tanach (Old Testament) about Israel: "But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation/ethnos" (Exodus 19:5-6; 1 Peter 2:9).  According to the doctrine of the Catholic Church, the Protestant denominations, and unfortunately many Messianic believers also, these scriptures apply only to the "once- you- were- not- my- people" meaning non-Israelites. Which is actually the opposite of who it is referring to.   In Hosea 1:9-10, these very words were spoken to the northern house of Israel, but now are viewed as the “Gentiles” who are in the 'holy and universal Church,' and are therefore regarded as the new "Israel of God" or the "one new man."  What has enabled Christendom to come to this conclusion is the way that this one Hebrew word - "GOY" - has been tampered with. Peter is quoting Hosea because he recognizes these believers as the “lost sheep of the House of Israel.” He wants to prove that Elohim is faithful to harvest the seed that He sowed, thus “how great the day of Yezreel” (Yah sows) (Hosea 1:11).

Did St. Jerome and the Catholic Church have any reason to introduce a translation of the Bible (the Vulgate) that would eliminate Israel as YHVH's legitimate chosen nation/goy?  It is not that Latin did not have a word for nation/goy. As a matter of fact, the origin of the English "nation" comes from the Latin "natio" (close in sound to the Greek "ethno," which is the root word the Greeks used for the Hebrew "goy," as mentioned above).  Jerome adapted the term “gentile” from the Latin “genitalis,” which in English is “genital” (male or female sex organs).  Of course, the seed issues from the male genital to the female’s, but humans do not become sex organs - “gentiles”!

YHVH defined "goy" and "goyim" when He divided the people and divvied out to them their lands (see Genesis 10:5, 32).  Thus, the true definition of "nation/goy" has three basic aspects: a people, tribe, or families living on a piece of real estate/land and subject to one government.  Thereby, we could say that government, people, and land are   the necessary components that define a "nation."  If we look at the covenant with the forefathers, it always entailed these three: land, a people, and YHVH's kingdom government (or man's).

What is so amazing is that even Jewish Israelis of today, as well as the Messianic Jews, do not identify themselves as a "goy."  They make use of the term "goy" or "goyim" exclusively for non-Jews or "Gentiles."  However, "goy" is still the one Hebrew word that YHVH uses to unite us as one people, and one nation (see Ezekiel 37: 22).  Without correcting this obvious mistranslation and misunderstanding, the "one new man" idea of Ephesians 2:15 is a nice concept, but it does not bring about unity.  The existence of thousands of Christian denominations attests to this fact; nor does it bear witness to YHVH's faithfulness in keeping covenant with Abraham and the "goy gadol" - "great nation" – Israel that was to issue forth from his loins.

  1. Thank you for declaring this clarification of terms, E&R. This is crazily tough nut to crack. Use of the term Gentile has become so ingrained among Jews and Christians that convincing them it does not mean what they think it means is difficult. That passage in Ephesians 2 is clear - especially verse 19 - "...you are NO LONGER foreigners and strangers.." but now members of Yehovah's household.
So, Christians who are still claiming to be Gentiles are incorrect; in fact, they are deceived.
Several years ago, we went to a 'concert' of a rather well-known "messianic" singer/songwriter. From the platform he expressed his 'joy' to be able to minister to Messianic believers, "as a Gentile." I remember being shocked and speechless.

  2. Thank you for bringing up a subject that has puzzled me for years! What a clarification! I too have come to "loath" the term "gentile" being used for non- Jewish followers of Messiah Yeshua. The intense "fear" or hatred of the truth of the two houses is so evident that the adversary is trying to distort the truth of Yah's word. How to proceed when it is so ingrained in their indoctrination?? I suppose it is called prayer for Revelation.

  3. Toda rabba Ephraim and Rimona. I’ve thoroughly disliked the Latin word “gentile” for years and had also written about it.

  4. The term Gentile is neither a word in Hebrew nor Greek, but a made up word by the Latin speaking conquerors of the Land of Israel that destroyed Jerusalem in 70CE.  I believe those Romans to have been (and maybe still are) anti Semitic, anti Israel, and anti Yahweh who we know mixed pagan rituals with Biblical truths, making their own hybrid religion.  The original singular Hebrew word, Goy or Goyim in plural, and the Greek word Ethnos always refers to "Peoples" or "Nations" and never non Jews, non Hebrews, non believers, nor non Israelites.

Latin and later.... English translators SELECTIVELY used the term "gentiles" when the context for the words "peoples" or "nations" referred to non-Israelite peoples and nations in their translations. Yahweh Himself uses the word "Goy" when He calls His people, the Israelites, His Goy, as He does in Genesis 12:2, "I will make you a Great Nation" or Goy G'dol.  In Exodus 19:6 Yahweh says of His people or goy, "You shall be a Kingdom of cohenim/priests and a Goy K'dosh" or Holy/set apart Nation.

Most English translations didn't translate from Hebrew to English.  They sidestepped the Hebrew and translated from Latin which already had an agenda.
For instance, in that Exodus 19:6 verse that we just referred to, your King James Version correctly translate the word, "Goy" as Nation.  But in Genesis 10:5 they incorrectly translate the same word, "Goy" as their new made up word, "Gentile".

The KJV translated the word "Goy" correctly as "Nation" 374 times and also correctly as "People" 11 times. They incorrectly translated Goy as "Heathen" 143 times, and incorrectly translated "Goy" as their made up word, "Gentile" 30 times.  No wonder we Israelites don't know who we are.  There are too many words that don't properly translate the single Hebrew word, Goy, always correctly.

In most peoples minds "Gentile" usually refers to a non Jew and so does "Goy".  Just as some non-Jewish xenophobes (a person who fears or hates foreigners) might make a statement like, "He tried to Jew the price down on that wristwatch!"  In retaliation an Orthodox Jewish person may use the word "Goy" in a pejorative sense while desiring to use the elevator on Shabbat.  "Get a Goy to push the elevator button for you," or "turn the light-switch on".

We know that the Romans were the conquering army and that being the conquerors over the Kingdom of Judah, the Latin language became the conquering language.  Hence many translations into English and other languages went through the Roman/Latin influence and agenda which to the best of my knowledge and studies shows me that they were anti-Semitic.  I don't like the word Gentile and don't use it.  It's not of Hebraic thought and isn't the word Yahweh uses to describe His Set Apart Goy/ People/Nation.

  5. Ezekiel 37: 21-22 ----
Yahweh will take Bnei Israel (children of Israel) from among the Goyim/Nations, bring them to their own soil, and make them into Goy Echad / One Nation in the land and they will no longer be Two Goyim/Nations/.

In Ezekiel 2:3 Yahweh calls B'nei Israel a rebellious goyim.

    A Final Thought
Just as the anti Semite Roman conquerors changed the word Goy to their new made up word Gentile, they also changed the name of the land of milk and honey, Israel, to Palestine, but most people figured that one out and caught on to their deception, but why is it that so many Yahweh fearing people that believe Yeshua is the Messiah still haven't figured out that the word Gentile is an even greater lie?  For some strange reason it is ingrained into people's minds that anyone who isn't Jewish is gentile.
    It's time to wake up!

    2. You touched on this, Ephraim, that our people do not know who they are. I said again today in my teaching. But getting them to understand they are Israelites is difficult because they can't see the difference between the modern UN-created STATE of Israel and Biblical Israel. The southern kingdom tribes, Judah, Levi, Benjamin and Simeon, had replacement theology as soon as Rehoboam tried to attack and conquer the newly formed northern House of Israel coalition in 1 Kings 12. By the time Yeshua came, the Jews had the whole world convinced that THEY, their 4 tribes called collectively "Jews", was Israel, as if YHVH changed His mind about Israel being defined as 12 tribes. 2900 years later, here we are trying to explain that believers in Yeshua are NOT gentiles! I have taken to using the terms "Jews" and "non-Jews". I realize that does not fulfill the correct language requirement but it is my starting place while I explain that the world is made of 2 people groups in the Bible - Israelites and gentiles. Some people take exception even with this, though. So what to do?

    3. One more thing. In the Jews' replacement theology (which they had WAAAAY before that doctrine appeared in Christianity), they still say they are in covenant with YHVH. First let me address their use of the term "Hashem" who is NOT YHVH! We don't know who this deity is, but he ain't YHVH.

Second, they are not in covenant with YHVH. When they killed Him on the cross, He killed them right back! What do I mean? Well, if you read Isaiah 54 (which comes right after the messianic prophecy of Yeshua in chapter 53 (I say it this way because chapter 54's prophecies have to do with what happened to the Jews)), and then go to verse 4:

Isa 54:4  “Don’t be afraid; for you will not be ashamed. Don’t be confounded; for you will not be disappointed. For you will forget the shame of your youth; and the reproach of your widowhood you shall remember no more.

... So I went there... You can see the Jews were widowed! That is why it is said in the NT that the ax was at the trees. Which trees? The FIG trees! And that is why Yeshua cursed and killed the FIG tree. It was a show and tell prophecy about what was going to happen to the Jews.

And, of course, killing your own husband leaves you a widow without Him having to kill you right back. Yeshua literally took ALL Israel to the grave with Him because He was starting over with the renewed and restored Israel He created at Mount Sinai, pure, pristine and a holy "ethnos". A holy "goy", nation.

Try explaining that to people! Oy veh!

  6. Thank you, Ed, Rivika, and Glenn, for posting your comments. Charlie Kirk's sacrifice for truth has given me a kick in the butt to continue to expose more "holy cows." I will get back to you all individually.

  7. Thank you, Kimberly, for your thoughts on the confusion, blindness, and frustration that arise when trying to share revelation- understanding with others to whom YHVH has not yet revealed or unveiled it to them. It was the Almighty Sovereign One who caused Israel's blindness (both houses). I believe the only approach is to explain the Gospel of the Kingdom from the Torah of Moses and the Prophets through the "Spirit of Elijah", mandated to turn the hearts of the children of Israel back to their identity as the seed of Jacob/Israel. There are many reasons that we can place over individuals who are not "getting it", but this only adds to the problem. It's the younger generation that will come to understand. Let us pray that during this very unique era, these generations that are following us will be free of the old preconceived ideas, having hearts open to Truth as it issues from their Kinsman Redeemer - Yeshua.

  8. Thank you, Ephraim, for this insight and clarification of terms. Well said, and may the true perspective take over the people of Israel.
